FAITHOUGHTS In the Image by Deb Burnet One million species of life on earth are at risk for extinction, according to a UN report released earlier this year (there are 8 million species overall). What’s our call, as people of God? God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle… So God created humankind… God blessed them, and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion’…” It’s pretty clear – we’re in charge, right? Humans have become the dominant species on earth and already were when Genesis was written. But that doesn’t answer the question. God gives us an idea in God’s first commandment to us: be ‘fruitful.’ If it’s just a numbers game, we have certainly fulfilled this command. 7.5 billion people are alive today, up from 2 billion at the Biblical creation (or perhaps 5 million around the time the earliest Biblical patriarchs lived). But isn’t that part of the problem? God’s words bother me. We are given ‘dominion’ and commanded to ‘subdue the earth.’ Couldn’t God have chosen a nicer image like ‘stewardship’? God’s words here refer literally to lordship and subjection. There are two ways to exercise lordship. Think of Jesus’ words: “The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them…But it shall not be so among you. Instead, the one who leads must be the one who serves.” Of course! We are made in God’s image, so we are to exercise lordship of the earth in God’s image. There’s a war going on for the creation. We can sell the Earth short by continuing to reap benefits cheaply . Or we can exercise Godly dominion. Which means learning how food production works, where our energy comes from, and how it’s used. It also means working to transform personal, local, national and global practices, in God’s image. Deb Burnet is a member of Faith. In her daily ministry she serves as a physician and a medical researcher. Reminder: turn back your clocks Saturday one hour
As daylight savings time is ending, remember to turn your clocks back Saturday night. If you’ve ever said, “I want to turn back time,” this week you can! See you in Sunday worship, well rested. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remembering the Saints: Named in Worship Sunday On All Saints’ Day, we remember witnesses to the faith who have gone before us: loved ones, friends, and family members. Names that have been collected will be read in worship this Sunday, All Saints’ Day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Green for Gobble Respond Now has challenged us to purchase turkeys (the gobble) to give to clients as part of Thanksgiving dinner. Money (green) can be donated in cash or check through the offering plate. A poster is up in the gathering area. Take a leaf and attach your donation to it. Looking ahead to December, Respond Now is asking us to participate in a Christmas basket challenge this year. Last year they challenged us to donate 400 jars of peanut butter (which we did!). This year, we have been challenged to donate 720 boxes of macaroni & cheese. We can do it!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
